Centered in conversations of Boston’s urban renewal in the late 70’s Blackstone Elementary was one of the biggest pushes for policy advocating for communities of color, impacted by the displacement and redesign of the city. As a “gateway city,” Boston intended a goal for the South End to be transformed into an urban center facing Fenway and the historic Beacon Hill, from Roxbury and Dorchester. This project was revisioning of what the students of Blackstone, most from immigrant backgrounds, vision as a gateway to represent their specific community.
